Organisation
The Foundation has a Board of Trustees and an Advisory Board. The majority of members is currently not employed by Heineken.
Board of Trustees
The Board of Trustees has the final responsibility for the activities of the Foundation and takes the final decisions with regard to approving or rejecting health projects and contracting education centres. The Board of Trustees meets at least twice a year and is represented in the Advisory Board meetings. The Board of Trustees include the following three persons:
Paul Hamers, chairman
After having graduated from Wageningen University in the Netherlands, Paul worked briefly with a Dutch fertilizer company. In 1970, he joined Heineken as a Trainee Brewer. During his first eight years with Heineken, Paul worked and lived with his family in Nigeria and Ghana. This was followed by other jobs in brewing and production in Holland and Italy. After this, for almost seven years, he became closely involved again in the African continent as Regional Technical Manager for Africa and the Middle East. Following this, after having worked in Argentina for two years, he was appointed Brewery Manager at the Heineken brewery in Zoeterwoude in the Netherlands. He then became Human Resources Director for the Dutch organi- sation. Paul retired in 2000 but continued as a Board Member of Nigerian Breweries and – later on – of Consolidated Breweries as well. From 2006 to 2008, he worked as an Interim Managing Director and Human Resources Director respectively for Nigerian Breweries.
Robin Hoytema van Konijnenburg, secretary/treasurer
Robin Hoytema van Konijnenburg has been the Group Finance Director of Heineken N.V. since June 2006, with responsibility for Tax, Treasury, Insurance and Investor Relations. Early 2005, he started with Heineken as Group Treasurer. Previously he worked for KLM, Wolters Kluwer and Solvay in the Netherlands and Belgium. Robin Hoytema started his career with United Nations Development Programme in Bujumbura, Burundi. He holds an MBA degree from the Rotterdam School of Management.
Dirk Elsen, member
Dirk Elsen has been Chairman of the Executive Board of Directors of SNV Netherlands Development Organisation since 2002. In this role, he oversees activities for over 2,500 clients carried out by over 1,400 people across 100 offices in 33 countries. Dirk has led the effort to build SNV into an advisory organisation focusing on capacity development. Its mission is to accelerate the impact of local actors in reducing poverty, improving governance and owning sustainability. He has also led SNV's 'Inclusive business' initiative launched in 2006, which encourages the private sector to incorporate low-income citizens into their value chain as producers, distributors and /or consumers. Prior to joining SNV, Dirk held several legal and management positions with Royal Dutch Shell and the Sultanate of Oman. In the early 1990s, Dirk took up a position as a legal counsel with the World Bank in Washington (DC), where his focus included private sector development and capacity building in Africa and the Middle East. After this, he worked in structured trade, finance and relationship management with ABN AMRO. Dirk has served on various other boards, including those of Agriprofocus and Hivos / Triodos Microcredit Fund.
Advisory Board
The Board of Trustees depends on the advice given by of the Advisory Board. The Advisory Board exists of five members on the basis of rotating membership. They meet at least four times a year and may propose projects and submit health- education centres. The Advisory Board advises the Board of Trustees on project proposals and it reviews and comments on existing projects. The members of the Board of Trustees include:
Dr Stefaan Van der Borght, chairman
Stefaan Van der Borght has been the Director of Health Affairs at Heineken since end 2007. In 1999, he started as Corporate Health Advisor. Heineken has breweries in several African and Asian countries; health care for employees and their dependents is often provided in-house when the necessary external medical care is unavailable. Stefaan has worked overseas for over 14 years, with Médecins Sans Frontières in Cambodia, Angola, Sudan, Chad and other African countries and in Kinshasa as medical director of the local Heineken operating company for a period of three years. He holds a Msc. degree in Public Health in Developing Countries from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. His main interests lie in prevention and treatment of HIV, malaria and tuberculosis and the finance and management of health services.
Dr Piet Kager, member
Piet Kager is a physician, specialised in tropical medicine, in particular tropical infectious diseases. He worked as a general practitioner in northeast Zaire and as a physician and internist at the Department of Internal Medicine, Kenyatta National Hospital, Nairobi, Kenya. From 1981, he was an internist- specialist in tropical medicine at the Academic Medical Centre of the University of Amsterdam, and from 1994 he was professor of tropical medicine until his retirement in 2008. His interests lie in health and health care in rural areas in resource poor settings. With colleagues, students and young scientists from the Netherlands and from developing countries he worked on leish- maniasis and malaria in particular, both in Africa and Asia. Special topics of interest were diagnostics, treatment and control of these parasitic diseases. Since his retirement, he has continued to be involved in several projects in Africa and Asia. He has continued teaching and is a member of several advisory boards.
Gerard Nieuwe Weme, member
Gerard Nieuwe Weme (1962) studied Civil Engineering at Wageningen University in the Netherlands. He also obtained his MBA degree from the Netherlands Open University. Gerard held various positions with SNV Nether- lands Development Organisation, in a large number of countries for a long period of time. In his most recent role, he acted as Regional Director for Eastern and Southern Africa. In this role he held end responsibility for the entire range of programmes. Since 2006, he has worked as an independent organisational consultant, and in this capacity – more recently – with the B&A Consulting Group. Hence, he has carried out a wide range of consulting projects for profit and non-profit organisations, including those focused on developing strategies, team development, subsidies, sustainable business and the fight against poverty.
Dr Henk Rijckborst, member
Henk Rijckborst is a medical doctor and was Health Affairs Director with Heineken International from 1986 until his retirement in 2007. He was then appointed Non-Executive Advisor to the Board, representing Heineken in several international medical organisations. Moreover, he is a consultant to several institutes and organisations. Henk has played an active role in the launch and implementation of the Heineken HIV /Aids HAART programme. He is co-author of a number of scientific publications based on the public health policies of the Heineken Group.
Dr Wim Van Damme, member
Wim Van Damme, MD, MPH, PhD, is a
senior lecturer in public health, teaching
health policy at the Institute of Tropical
Medicine, Antwerp, Belgium (www.itg.be).
For over 10 years, he has worked for
Médecins sans Frontières in Peru, Sudan,
Guinea and Cambodia. His PhD thesis is
titled ‘Medical Assistance to Self-settled
Refugees in Guinea, 1990 - 96’.
His main research interests lie in health
policy in fast-changing societies:
1. pro-poor health financing and health
policy in South-East Asia, with a
special focus on Health Equity Funds
in Cambodia.
2. international health policy, mainly
new funding mechanisms, such as
the Global Health Initiatives (e.g.
the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB &
malaria) and their impact on national
health systems in donor-dependent
countries, such as Mozambique and
Malawi;
3. delivery models for Aids care,
especially their human resources
configurations in countries with
very high HIV prevalence.
Heineken Africa Foundation Coordinator
The Heineken Africa Foundation Coordinator ensures proper processing of the proposals, coordinates communication and financial flows, is the first line of support for (potential) submitters of proposals and organises board meetings. The Heineken Africa Foundation coordinator is:
Katinka C. van Cranenburgh
Katinka C. van Cranenburgh has worked with Heineken since 1998. She is also Secretary General of 3iG, the Internatio- nal Interfaith Investment Group. In this position, she builds a network of ‘active capitalists’ from faith institutions who are willing to invest in socially responsible activities. She is also visiting scholar at ESADE business school in Barcelona, Spain, lecturing and researching corporate social responsibility and social responsible investments, and she is associate director of the European Academy of Business in Society (EABIS). For over eight years, Katinka has contributed to Heineken’s policy development and healthcare strategy for developing countries in the area of sustainability and in particular of business healthcare. She coordinated health and sustainability related programmes, ranging from Selling Beer Safely programmes for Asian and African beer promoters or alcohol awareness campaigns for Heineken workers worldwide, to extensive HIV /Aids prevention, treatment and community programmes in Africa and Asia.

The official name of the Foundation is the Heineken Afrika Stichting, while the organisational format is that of a Foundation, registered under Dutch law in December 2007. The Heineken Africa Foundation has the so-called ANBI (Algemeen Nut Beogende Instelling) status and therefore donations to the Heineken Africa Foundation can be fiscally attractive.
