Frequently asked questions

  1. Does the Heineken Africa Foundation accept proposals / request for funding that are not supported by the manager of the relevant local Heineken operating company?
No, all proposals should be sent to the Foundation coordinator after having received approval of the General Manger of the local relevant Heineken operating company. All proposals need to meet the funding criteria of the Foundation.
  2. Can I check whether my proposal would be eligible prior to going through the approval process?
Yes, you can check your ideas via HAF@Heineken.com.
  3. What is the schedule from project proposals to approved projects?
There are two rounds of proposals each year. The deadlines are January 1st and July 1st. During the months of January and July the Foundation Coordinator will communicate with the submitter. In February and August the Foundations’ Advisory Board judges the proposals and advises the Trustees. The Trustees decide in February and December and the Coordinator will then advise the submitters.
  4. How should I submit a proposal?
The Foundation has set up a Lotus Notes based Foundation Database that can only be accessed by Heineken employees. Proposals should be submitted via this system. Application templates are also available in MS Word format for NGOs to prepare. Please contact HAF@Heineken.com for access to the database or to receive a copy of the latest template.
  5. Is the Foundation aiming at projects in Africa or only Sub Sahara Africa?
The Foundation is called the Heineken Africa Foundation. Currently, the Foundation focuses on supporting projects in Sub Sahara Africa only. Projects to be funded will have to be located in countries in which Heineken is operating. Heineken’s presence can guarantee the availability of expertise, experience and systems of Heineken operating companies.
  6. What is the role of NGOs?
The Foundation believes that collaboration with NGOs is key in creating successful projects. A partnership between the Foundation (for funding), the local Heineken operating company (for support, monitoring and resources) and an NGO (for expertise and experience) will guarantee the necessary quality, resources and sustainability. The NGO should preferably lead the project, since the activity of the project is their core business.
  7. Why does the Heineken regional or local organisation not decide upon projects?
The Foundation is an independent Foundation, registered under Dutch law. It is not a ‘wholly-owned’ operating company of Heineken and therefore decisions lie with the Foundation Trustees. The expertise, knowledge and resources of local Heineken operating companies as well as support from volunteers at Heineken Corporate departments is needed in order to make projects a success.
  8. What is the relation between Heineken and the Foundation?
End 2007, Heineken has created the Foundation with an amount of 10 million Euro. From its interest, the Foundation can support healthcare projects in Africa. The Foundation is independent and registered under Dutch law. The expertise, knowledge and resources of local Heineken operating companies, as well as support from volunteers at Heineken Corporate departments enable the Foundation to have a flat organisation with low administrative costs. Many of the Foundations’ Trustees and Advisory Board members are independent and the Trustees have decision-making authority.
